SUSAN “SID” SARGENT

Sid Sargent, 65, of Lincoln died Sunday, January 20, 2008 at home in her bed.
Born September 7, 1942, in New York, NY, the daughter of Fitzwilliam and Beatrice Butler Sargent, She was an artist, a mother and a champion of freedom and creative living. She moved to the Northwest Arkansas area with her two children in 1976, after having lived in New Hampshire, Vermont, New Mexico, Colorado, California, Oregon, British Columbia, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.
After building a small farm in the hills of Madison county, She moved to Fayetteville in 1981. In 1986, Sargent ran for congress as a Democrat in the 3rd district.
She was a prolific artist, working with a variety of materials and mediums. She drew cartoons and illustrations for the Grapevine and the Fayetteville Free Weekly and became known for her handmade hats, bags and folk art.
She was a great fan of the U.S. mail, sending hundreds of handmade cards, each of which was witty and unique. She regularly challenged the postal service’s limits of mailability.
She was passionate about healthy living and the traditions of gardening and farming. She loved her animals. She stood up for freedom, and she lived her philosophy every day.
Survivors are her children; Eugene and Rachel Sargent of Lincoln and Prairie Grove, a brother Fitz Sargent of Phippsburg, Maine and sisters Be and Pauline Sargent of Gallup and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
