Good Luck For Black Cats/Dogs
On Sat., Feb. 16, the Animal League of Washington County will be sponsoring adoption fees for all the adoptable black dogs and cats at the Washington County Animal Shelter. “Dinosaur Train: Submarine Adventure,” is a brand new science special from The Jim Henson Company. It will premiere on the Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) Mon., Feb. 18, at 8 a.m. and repeat at 1 p.m.
In this one-hour episode, the Pteranodon family dives into an underwater adventure that introduces four new stories about sea creatures that lived during the “Age of the Dinosaurs.” Preschoolers will learn about natural science, natural history and paleontology while meeting new characters. As part of the program’s multiplatform event, “Dinosaur Train” will also feature new content in its online and mobile platforms throughout February. Both full episodes and clips from “Submarine Adventure” will be available on the PBS KIDS video player at pbskids.org/video and on the PBS KIDS video app starting Tues., Feb. 19.
Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR) board of director members, Bill Plummer and Eric Studer, recently visited “Jungle” Jack Hanna, Director Emeritus of the Columbus Zoo, for input on their initiative to relocate more than 30 big cats to the Eureka Springs refuge.
Hanna and Columbus Zoo staff experts shared insights and suggestions on key issues, including community fundraising, habitat construction and soliciting corporate sponsorships. The Columbus Zoo team also provided an overview of new laws for private ownership of dangerous/endangered wildlife and its long-term impact on non-profit refuges and sanctuaries. Blues Challenge Winners
The Blues Foundation’s 29th International Blues Challenge concluded Feb. 2 with an afternoon twin bill at the Orpheum Theatre. The solo/duo winner was Little G Weevil, sponsored by Atlanta Blues Society and second place honors went to The Suitcase Brothers, a duo from the Barcelona Blues Society in Spain.
The top prize in the Band competition was awarded to the Selwyn Birchwood Band of the Suncoast Blues Society. Second place honors were earned by Michael van Merwyk and Bluesoul, German Blues Network, and the third spot went to Dan Treanor’s Afrosippi Band w/ Erica Brown, hailing from the Colorado Blues Society.
Scholarships For Kids
The Kohl’s Department Stores (NYSE: KSS) Kohl’s Cares® Scholarship Program will award about $425,000 in scholarships and prizes this year. Ranging from $50 Kohl’s gift cards to $10,000 scholarships, about 2,300 young volunteers who have made a positive impact on their communities will be selected. Nominations for kids ages 6 to 18 will be accepted Feb. 1 – March 15. To nominate volunteers for a Kohl’s Cares scholarship, visit kohlskids.com. Nominators must be 21 years or older. Two nominees from each of the more than 1,100 Kohl’s stores nationwide will win a $50 Kohl’s gift card, and more than 200 will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward post-secondary education. Ten national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.
