Saving money makes sense. I also know I should get out of bed when the alarm goes off. But the snooze button wins that battle. Starting in October, Fayetteville Public Library’s program Saving Money Makes Cents will be your snooze alarm. Working with our very talented partners, we’ve developed a series of classes to focus on different ways to save and build up a rainy day fund with even the tightest of budgets.
“No time and no extra money,” you lament? The library makes it easy to participate, and knowing how busy the average family is, we’ve arranged for free dinners, children’s activities, and Ozark Regional Transit vouchers to get you to the meetings.
The sessions focus on how to talk about money. Whether this means talking with your children about spending or discussing financial planning with your spouse or parents, the workshops will help you reach your goals.
Fayetteville Public Library is partnering with Credit Counselors of Arkansas, the University of Arkansas Bessie Moore Center for Economic Education and the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service to create workshops that show practical money strategies for families and individuals.
The first session provides tools to become a future-oriented family with spending and budgeting; the second workshop focuses on spending and saving strategies; and the final workshop looks at ways to protect money from scams, navigate insurance options, and build strong credit.
“I’m too busy,” you say. We want to make it convenient for you. Workshops will be offered at various locations in Fayetteville. The sessions at Head Start, LifeSource and the library are designed for families. Teen classes will be offered by the UA Cooperative Extension Service at Woodland Junior High, and the library will also host a Game of (Real) Life tournament for teens. Events held at the Central United Methodist Church will be geared toward senior citizens. Thursday programs at LifeSource International will be offered in Spanish. The Fayetteville Marshallese Christian Church will also host monthly sessions in Marshallese.
Additionally, the library has many resources that can help with finances. Through this program, the library has added personal finance books and e-books to its collection, and created a website with solid financial tips and information. There are resources for every age, with a number of great items geared towards parents and children. The library also has many investment resources. Morningstar and Value Line, available 24/7 from the library’s website, are two examples. Universal Class, an online learning service also available through the library’s website, offers self-paced, in-depth courses such as “Investing 101” and “Retirement Planning.”
Fayetteville Public Library designs services to help you achieve your best life, and the Saving Money Makes ¢ents initiative helps put you on the path to financial empowerment.
