Is Fayetteville Content As State's Best

A good question came up after the recent BUSINESSWEEK ranking of Fayetteville as having the best business climate in the state. Should Fayetteville take pride in such a ranking? The answer is “yes.” Should Fayetteville be content with that ranking? The answer is “no.” A resounding no. From the new Chamber of Commerce head, Steve Clark, who has been keeping one very low profile, to our bright new Mayor Lioneld Jordan, who has been one busy guy, these two guys are not content on being just the state’s best. They (and hopefully many others) have bigger dreams. Too many times all the polls come out and Fayetteville folks take a collective sigh and say, “Ain’t that fine,” but this is something to build on. Let’s get after some bigger economic strides. Daddy W. is talking nationally.

A Pottery Studio
The pottery studio at Flat Rock Clay has reopened as aPotteryStudio. The 2002 S. School Ave. shop closed its retail pottery supply operations a month ago. Now classes are under way and the biz boasts being the best-equipped private pottery studio in the region. They will continue to host the Boston Mountain Potters Association on a regular basis. The studio produces the annual Empty Bowls event that helps out local charities. aPotteryStudio.com.

Marianne Neighbors has been named to a three-year appointment as a co-director of the Wally Cordes Teaching & Faculty Support Center at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Neighbors teaches both introductory and advanced nursing classes. Congrats.
Glass Gone
David Glass, the former president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., is riding off into retirement sunset, stepping down from the company’s board of directors. He will leave the Wal-Mart board on June 5. The Kansas City Royals, which he owns, need his help.
On The Rise
Warwick Sabin, a former UA Senate President, who is publisher of The Oxford American, has been named to the 2009 Folio: 40, a list of top national magazine figures. Sabin has been publisher of the magazine for a year. A big award for an up-and-comer.
New Passport Regs
More requirements for traveling Americans. As of June 1, American citizens entering Canada, Mexico and countries in the Caribbean must have a valid passport. The requirements were already in place for air travelers.
New WAC Boss
Welcome to Peter B. Lane, who was name President/CEO of the Walton Arts Center last week. Lane recently served as the CEO of the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a $100 million arts center located on the original site of the 1969 Woodstock Festival in New York. He also plays a mean bass, we are told.
Big Answer
Some 40 percent of women say they have hurled their footwear at a man. Doesn’t surprise Daddy W. Does it surprise you? Even if in Arkansas most of the footwear is foam flip-flops.
