Three Summer DIY’s
By Tanya Giraldo
As summer rolls around, whether one is bored or saving money for vacation, Pinterest and other do-it-yourself social phenomenon can become an obsession. Everyone starts filling up their DIY board to find cheap ways to get ready for summer, but no need to turn on your computer right now because here are three DIY summer favorites that are cheap, easy, and fun to do.
DIY #1: Turn Your Old Jeans into Shorts
You will need your old jeans, your favorite shorts, a pair of fabric scissors and a seam ripper.
First– Lay your jeans out flat. Make sure there are no crinkles on the side seams and the crotch area.
Second– Lay your shorts flat on top of your jeans and also make sure they lay flat with no crinkles and that each seam pairs up. (If you don’t have favorite shorts, grab a ruler or measuring tape and measure from the top of your jeans down the length to 12” inches and cut there).
Third– Cut jeans, making sure not to cut shorts. It’s okay to leave a little space between where you are cutting and your shorts.
Fourth– Once cut, fold your new shorts in half and make sure to cut so that both legs are even.
Fifth– Using a seam ripper, pull out some of the strings on the legs of your new shorts to give them a grungy look (also hides any mishaps you had along the way).
Finally– Now you have brand new shorts for the beach that didn’t cost you a thing and they fit nicely.
Note: you can also add jewels to the pockets or sew fabrics and lace to them to give them a complete makeover. Be as creative and unique as you want.
DIY #2: Make Your Own Beachy Hair Spray
Your will need an empty spray bottle, 2 cups of hot water, 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, and (optional) 1 tablespoon of your favorite conditioner.
First– Mix all ingredients into a bowl or even into the spray bottle itself.
That’s it. Spray onto wet hair, twisting sections as your spray and let air-dry. Now you have beach waves without having to go to the beach.
DIY #3: Easy Patriotic Snack
You will need whipped crème, blue sprinkles, fresh strawberries, and a bowl or tray.
First– Wash your strawberries (you may remove the stem and leaves if you prefer).
Second– Add whipped crème to 2/3 of the strawberry, leaving a little bit of red showing at the top. (You can also do this with white chocolate for a cleaner effect. I chose whipped crème because it looks like the waves of a flag).
Third– lay the strawberry down on some wax or parchment paper. Add blue sprinkles to the bottom 1/3 of the strawberry.
Fourth– You can freeze the strawberries or go ahead and eat your delicious miniature American flags.
