Mardi Gras in Fayetteville will be celebrated at three events. At 2:30 p.m. Friday the Demented Krewe of Dickson and the Billy Zydeco Band will hold a Mardi Gras party for the residents of City Hospital. The City Hospital parade will now be know as the Parade of Pearls in honor of the late Suzanne Ray, a former director of nursing at the hospital and longtime krewe member who was known as the Duchess of Pearls.

At 3 p.m. Saturday the Parade of Fools will roll from the University of Arkansas campus and follow Dickson Street east to Block Street where it will end on the square. There will be festivities at the square and the float winners will be announced. The parade is family-friendly and will include bead throws and several elaborately decorated floats. Frank Sharp will be the Grand Marshall.

Adults can celebrate Mardi Gras on Tuesday when the Demented Krewe of Dickson begins Mardi Gras Day festivities with a dinner that is open to the public at Jose’s on Dickson Street. At 8 p.m. the krewe will move to Jose’s Streetside for the announcement and crowing of the new king and queen. Afterwards, the Billy Zydeco Band, the new king and queen and their royal court will parade Brewski’s, Roger’s Rec, 21st Amendment, Common Grounds, Hog Haus and will end up at Zooloo’s.

The Demented Krewe of Dickson was founded 17 years ago by a small group of friends. Dr. Bill and Betty Harrison were the first king and queen. A new king and queen are crowned each year. The identity of which is secret until the crowning on Mardi Gras Day.
