Taking The Helm

Taking The Helm
Justine Middleton and Christina Mere will lead the Fayetteville Animal Shelter as superintendent and coordinator, respectively. These positions became available last month after an internal investigation led to the termination of three shelter employees.
A Proactive Idea
Spay Arkansas is campaigning for a mobile clinic. Local shelters can’t keep up with the overpopulation of cats and dogs so euthanization is a regular solution. If enough money is raised to purchase a self-supporting mobile clinic, area shelters could possibly become no kill shelters.
Funding Plan B
The Fayetteville High School construction plan has been recharged with $45 million in bonds. Just think of how well that would have paired with a $50 million check from the UA, or a millage increase. No sense in looking back though.
Dickson Street Parking
By now you’ve heard that the city owned parking lot at Dickson Street and West Avenue, commonly called the Walton Arts Center parking lot, and two smaller city owned lots in the Dickson Street area may become paid parking lots. Inevitably. But how? Will they only charge on event nights? Will they be able to ticket and tow? Will they only charge enough to staff for the parking lot attendants? Or will there be a greater plan, to build, as former Mayor Dan Coody once proposed, a tiered parking deck? With the highrise skyline created by the Barber and Underwood condos, maybe a parking deck won’t be as ugly as it would have before.
CAN Do Attitude
Last month’s food drive coordinated by the UA resulted in 75,000 pounds of food donated to the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank. Tyson re-emphasized its local support by contributing 60,000 pounds of that gift. The 75,000 pounds will provide 375,000 meals, but is a fraction of the 3 million pounds of food distributed locally in a year. There are more than 150 nonprofit agencies that help feed the impoverished and homeless of NWA. Sort through your pantry and bring in those canned meats, fruits, beans and rice.
