Milestone Helps Further Dream Of World With No Homeless Pets

Staff Report

Spay Arkansas, host of low-cost spay and neuter services, performed its 10,000th surgery Aug. 22. In honor of the milestone, the 10,000th client received a free surgery and gift basket.

Spay Arkansas is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 by Marcia Donley, of Fayetteville, to address the problem of pet overpopulation by promoting low-cost spay and neuter surgeries. The organization operates without any government funding and its services are open to residents of Northwest Arkansas, western Oklahoma and southern Missouri.

Spay Arkansas began hosting the clinic in March 2011, serving low-income families and individuals, senior citizens, students and area animal rescues and shelters. By offering low-cost spay and neuter surgeries, the staff of Spay Arkansas endeavors to reduce euthanasia in shelters by targeting the root of the problem: pet overpopulation. They envision a world in which there are “no more homeless pets” and they work toward this goal tirelessly by performing an average of 38 surgeries on each of the two or three days the clinic is open each week.

Base prices include the spay or neuter surgery and a rabies vaccination. The cost is $35 for cats, $45 for dogs under 50 lbs., $55 for dogs over 50 lbs., and $1 per lb for dogs over 75 lbs. Additional vaccines (DHLP for dogs or FVRCP for cats) are available for $10 more. Microchips, which are now required by many city ordinances, are available for $20.

Spay Arkansas is also one of the few clinics in the area to offer low-cost options for TNR (trap/neuter/return) as a means to humanely control feral cat populations. Financial assistance is often available for those who desire to have their pet altered but for whom finances are a challenge. Spay Arkansas also offers a monthly public vaccine clinic for pets that are already altered but need updated shots or microchips.

To celebrate the 10,000th surgery milestone, and to thank the community for their support, Spay Arkansas plans to host a free outdoor celebration on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 2 to 5 p.m. at their clinic location at 1909 W. Huntsville Ave. in Springdale. There will be food, carnival games, live music and prizes thanks to the help of Adventure Subaru, Dog Party USA and other sponsors.
