Polished school hallways, new shoes, rows and rows of school supplies on the store shelves: Nothing spurs the desire to explore new avenues of learning more than this time of year. If you’re an adult hankering to learn a new skill or polish up an old one, Northwest Arkansas-area organizations have you covered! Check out these class offerings for ideas.

Trees of Arkansas — Join conservation researchers Kaylee McAdoo and Nathan Sorey from the University of Arkansas to learn about old-growth cypress and Tupelo forests in Arkansas, 6 p.m. Sept. 12

Getting the Most Entertainment from Your Library Card — In this class, you will learn about the resources the library offers for entertainment, including Flipster, Freegal, Naxos, Overdrive, Cloud Library and Hoopla. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptop, tablet or smart phone, any passwords and their up-to-date library card to follow along, 11:30 a.m. Sept. 18. Registration is required and will open Sept. 14.

Introduction to Genealogy — See a quick demo on Ancestry.com. Learn the tools to use and the people that can help you use them. Tour the Genealogy collection and bring your questions, 1 p.m. Sept. 22.

True Lit: Crafting the Adventure Scene with Gordon Korman —In this hands-on workshop, participants will structure the different elements that come together to create exciting and suspenseful adventure scenes, 2 p.m. Oct. 28. This workshop is free to the public, but registration is required.

True Lit: Pitch Like a Pro to the Pros — For writers trying to get their break, the publisher pitch is critical. In this interactive workshop, author Marilyn Collins will guide you through strategies to give you the best chance to impress publishers, 10 a.m. Oct. 29. This workshop is free, but registration is required.

True Lit: Tell Your Story — Exploring the personal essay with Eizabeth Demeo, 1 p.m. Nov. 3.

True Lit: How to Query a Novel with Maria Hostetter — Participants will hear an interactive lecture on the basics of querying a novel, in which they will learn how to identify suitable agents, how to compose a query letter, and how to follow up with query submissions, 2 p.m. Nov. 3.

Hundreds of Master Gardeners from around the state visited the garden with free admission and heard presentations. This is the first time that Master Gardener Day has been held in Northwest Arkansas. Oct. 13 will mark the 28th year that the Master Gardeners in Arkansas has been active in the state.
