Jeffrey Miller is a 1997 graduate of the University of Arkansas who has just published his first novel. The book is based largely on his experiences in small town Arkansas and is entitled “Mary of the Aether.” And fans won’t be left hanging as a sequel has already been submitted to publisher Whiskey Creek Press.

 

42 Of 50 Ain’t Bad

The Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 2012 Kids Count research project found Arkansas is 42nd in the nation for child well-being. It could be worse, or at least it was just last year when Arkansas was ranked 47th. The criteria for making the grade consists of education, family and community and health, along with 16 different indicators. Improvements were mainly in healthcare and education, based on the study.

 

Back-To Scams

While some charities collect back-to-school items to help families in need provide their children with school supplies without breaking the family budget, others are just plain stealing. The Arkansas Attorney General’s Office warns to research, so you know the receiving organization is a legitimate charity.

 

Water Rationing?

Water sales have increased dramatically this summer at Beaver Water District because of the drought. The district sold more than 2.2 billion gallons of water in July, setting a record for the third month in a row, Chris Weiser of the district said. He also said this reminds us just how important it is that we have an abundant source of economical drinking water. Don’t worry! It would have to be a year or two into a drought before rationing would occur, based on current figures.

 

Firearms Up In Smoke

Eighty-two firearms have been seized by the Fayetteville Police Department over the past few years. As of July 31, the firearms were destroyed in an attempt to “ensure these weapons are kept off the streets, and are never again used to commit crimes.” Weapons destroyed included rifles, shotguns and handguns.

Toad Suck has been voted America’s “most unfortunate” town name in a global poll by findmypast.com. Yep, it even beat out Climax, Ga., or Boring, Ore., and even Hooker, Okla.
