Three private Arkansas colleges also rank
The University of Arkansas was one of four Arkansas educational institutions among 139 schools recently named to The Princeton Review’s 2009 edition of the “Best Southeastern Colleges.” Woo Pig Sooie. Someone must have been eavesdropping on new Chancellor Dr. G. David Gearhart’s focus speech on being “student based.”
Three private colleges also made the list: Harding University at Searcy, Hendrix College at Conway and Lyon College at Batesville.
The Princeton Review’s vice president of publishing, Robert Franek, said in a published statement that the selection was made based on institutional data collected from several hundred schools in each region, visits to schools over the years and the opinions of independent and high school based college advisers. Some of the results were derived from an 80-question student survey.
Again, Woo Pig. Ready for a new academic and economic year in Fayetteville. Go Hogs Go.
THE BIG QUESTION
Up or down? After political candidates with the two major political parties made an appearance on The Colbert Report, guess which party saw a 44 percent boost in campaign donations?
FALLING WALL
The Greenhouse Grille closed for repairs this week, but will reopen as soon as an unsafe wall surrounding the restaurant is repaired. If you haven’t noticed, the retaining wall on the north side of the building has become a hazard. Since opening just a few years ago, the restaurant has quickly become one of the most popular in town. The owners say they are taking advantage of the downtime to redesign the menu and will add more organic beers and wines and more “inventive daily specials created with local organic ingredients.”
DRINKING DRY
Benton County folks may soon have yet another new place to wet their whistle as Soloedad Osequera has made application for a private club permit for Osequera’s Mexican Cuisine at 3404 SE Macy Road in Bentonville. It’s easy to drink up in Benton County, even though it’s dry.
MORE DRINKING
And yet another private club permit has been requested in Benton County. Guido’s Pizza 4 at 1728 S. 46th St. in Rogers also wants to serve adult beverages.
SUNDAY DRINKING
The newest BBQ joint in Fayetteville, the Pig N Whistle at 1641 W. 15th St. has requested a Sunday Sales and Consumption permit.
SALES DOWN
Yes, sales are down, but prices on new homes, heck any home in Arkansas, are still up. That’s the latest from the Arkansas Realtors Association. This marks the 30th straight monthly decline in home sales.
BRAZIL BOUND
Wal-Mart says it will spend over a billion — yes, with a B — billion dollars on its growth in Brazil next year. The world’s largest retailer plans to open 80-90 stores in 2009. Argentina is also going to get some new stores as part of the South American push. Can you see Lee Scott wearing the Carmen Miranda hat soon? You bet.
LESS TRUCKS
There are about 2.4 percent fewer big rigs on the interstate highways these days. High fuel costs and retailer cutbacks are to blame. The adjustment is cutting out some of the smaller truckload carriers.
STILL ON TOP
Looks like CBS affiliate KFSM-TV, Channel 5 was the ratings winner in the 11-county designated market area for all evening newscasts according to Nielsen Media Research. KFSM had an 11.4 rating in that slot. ABC affiliate KHBS/KHOG-TV, Channels 40/29 had a 7.8 rating followed by KNWA-TV, Channel 51, the NBC affiliate, with a 4.4 rating at 10 p.m. But wait. KNWA was the top performer at 10 p.m. in the three-county area of Benton, Madison and Washington counties. In the three-country market at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., KFSM beat both KHOG and KNWA. KFTA-TV, Channel 24 is the Fox affiliate and has only a 9 p.m. newscast, so is not ranked.
BIG ANSWER
Democrats who were on the show saw a 44 percent bump, a survey said. Republicans candidates who were guests experienced no rise in contributions. Cha-Ching!
